FYI - You can sand off several layers of fingerprint area skin, and still have the fingerprint pattern in deeper layers of skin. Yesterday's experiment failed.

I wasn't planning on it. Especially after this lesson. Edge sanders are great, except when you do stupid things with them.

have you tried the grip tape available from the woodworking houses. works well at holding things and keeping your finger ends intact.

even cheaper if you know a friendly vet who'll sell you a roll cheap, then you can cut the roll to whatever smaller width rolls you like.

yep, finger protector tape-'tis good stuff. It's hard to play guitar when you're missing layers of skin. YOUCH!

I sanded the finger nails on my picking hand right down two days before one of our biggest folk festivals. The girl in the local nail bar was a bit surprised to see a bearded man sitting in front of her to have acrylics put on only three fingers and a thumb!

Collin I when I was playing in public regularly I use to have mine done once a month. I always had them use the amber acrylic solvent due to an incident that happened once. I had a gig at a local late night coffee house that had black lights all around. The shop that usually did my nails was close for remodel so I had gone to another. They used the pinkish solvent, and my nails glowed like phosphors. Someone in the crowd asked me if lived next to a nuclear power plant or something.

Yep, I get mine done regularly now. I love the consistency of the sound, and the range of dynamics they give. My students think it's a bit weird though!

May sound weird but I put med. cyno mixed with fine sawdust and put on fingertips. Works great

In all seriousness, be careful with your fingernails. One of the machinists at work had a minor accident splitting wood. It damaged the cuticle on a number of his fingers. Years later, those fingernails have a weak line down the middle that breaks very easily. It's like having a permanent hangnail.

In woodshop in high school, I got one of my fingers caught in a disk sander. It got sucked down between the table and the disk, took the whole nail off. It grew back and you can't tell it happened, though it took a few years to look normal again.

Now there's a mistake you'll only make once.

In my tablesaw incounter this year I took off 1/3 of one side of my finger from the tip to the first knuckel all is ok now but I will never have cuticle on the right side of that finger. I have to trim the nail bi-daily to keep from having the nail curl into the finger and cause an ingrown nail.
